India’s junior women’s hockey team returns strongly
Santiago, January 22 |
India’s junior women’s hockey team came back strongly after falling behind twice. India stopped the Chilean senior team 2–2 in their fourth match of the tour here.
Chile scored twice at the Prince of Wales Country Club thanks to goals from Mariana del Jesus Lagos (21st minute) and Fernanda Villagra (51st minute) but Deepika (40th minute) and Gagandeep Kaur (55th minute) brought India back. The match was drawn.
The confident Indian team got off to a brisk start with three wins in the first three matches of the tour but failed to create a big chance by penetrating the Chilean defence in the first 15 minutes.
Chile, on the other hand, adopted a counterattack strategy and benefited from it in the second quarter.
Mariana of Chile got enough time to play the contract shot in front of India’s goal, which gave her team an edge.
India made a comeback to try to take control of the match but the hosts kept a 1-0 lead till midway due to their strong defence.
The Indian team created several chances in the third quarter. After missing several opportunities at the penalty corner, India scored in the 40th minute thanks to Deepika’s field goal.
Chile got a penalty stroke in the 51st minute when the Indian team fouled. Villagra converted it into a goal to put Chile ahead 2–1.
India, however, managed to equalize within four minutes when they got a penalty stroke and Gagandeep scored the Chile goalkeeper to make it 2-2.
Both teams then attempted to score goals but did not succeed.
The Indian team will play two more matches against the Chilean senior team on Saturday and Sunday.
