Why should ‘naturalized’ players in Indian basketball?
Lucknow, 17 January
Why should ‘naturalized’ players in Indian basketball? The captain of the Indian basketball team and the Vishesh Bhriguvanshi, who was awarded the Arjuna Award, emphasized the need to give basketball a proper platform in the country.
Like the rest of the world, there is a need to create a policy to include ‘naturalized’ means ‘guest players’ in India.
Bhriguwanshi said on Sunday that the government is doing its best to make basketball popular in the country like cricket and hockey but it seems that some things are lacking.
He said, “The court of basketball is usually visible in colleges, but the craze for this game is not there, which is for cricket and hockey. To change this situation, starting of basketball league is very important.
Apart from this, it is important to have more and more basketball and it is more important to get them a proper place in the media.”
Vishesh has been nominated for Uttar Pradesh’s biggest sports award ‘Laxman Award’.
The Vishesh said, ‘‘Today you also see the Pro League of Kabaddi. Why watch, because on TV. Basketball is played a lot in schools and colleges, so this sport is already very popular among the youth. All it needs is a platform where more and more basketball is played. If people start looking, their attraction will increase automatically.”
Who is called a ‘naturalized’ player?
Like the basketball teams of other countries, he suggested a policy of keeping guest players in India.
Who is called a ‘naturalized’ player? To this, Bhriguwanshi said, “If you look at other basketball teams in Asia, almost everyone has a naturalized player or guest player. If there is a good foreign player then he is given his citizenship and included in the team. Such a player is called a ‘naturalized player’ or a ‘guest player’.”
Also, be a naturalized player in India
He said, “In football itself, if a team does not have a good striker or goalkeeper and there is such a player abroad, then they are given citizenship of their country by mutual consent and are included in the team.
It is found in the basketball team of most countries of the world. There are many players of foreign origin living in India who want to play here, but there is no policy of having naturalized players in India.”
The captain of the Indian basketball team, who was conferred with the Arjuna Award in September last year, also said that basketball players are not taken so much in India.
He said “I received the Arjuna Award last year. Nearly 19 years later, a male basketball player was awarded this award. Earlier in 2001, Parminder Singh received this award. Then I got it in 2020. Two women basketball players in between received this award. The situation can be gauged from this.”
Although he believes that the Indian Basketball Federation is working tirelessly to get a good league started, everything has stalled due to Covid. Now that the Coronavirus vaccine has arrived, it seems that things will be better than before.
When asked about the future preparations, the Vishesh said that they are qualifying for the Asia Cup tournament to be held later this year. His last round is due next month. India has to win one more match to qualify.
