Indian challenge over at Thailand Open
Bangkok, January 14
India’s star shuttler Saina Nehwal was knocked out of the Thailand Open Super 1000 badminton tournament in the second round of the women’s singles on Thursday after losing to Busanan Ongbamrungphan of Thailand.
Thursday was not a good day for other Indian players as well, which ended the Indian challenge in this tournament.
How Saina lost?
Saina won the first game but after that, she could not maintain the rhythm and lost the match 23-21, 14-21, 16-21 which lasted for 68 minutes. This is Saina’s fourth consecutive defeat at the hands of 12th ranked Busanan in the world.
In the men’s singles, former world number one Kidambi Srikanth had to give a walkover to eighth seeded Lee Zii Jia of Malaysia due to a muscle strain in his right shin.
India also lost in the men’s doubles
Earlier in the men’s doubles, India’s Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty also lost to Indonesia’s Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan 19-21, 17-21.
Disappointment even in mixed doubles
India’s eyes were now on Satvik and his mixed doubles partner Ashwini Ponnappa but they too lost 12-21, 17-21 to Hong Kong’s Chang Tak Ching and Ng Wing Young, ending the Indian challenge in the tournament.
There were long rallies between Saina and Busanan but the Thai player made good shots which benefited him. In the first game, Saina was leading 6-5 at one point but Busanan was leading 11-9 till the break.
Saina, however, made a comeback and tied the score at 17-17. Saina made her name in the first game due to Busanan’s loose return on the net.
In the second game, Saina made some mistakes which took advantage of which Busanan went ahead 11-6. Even after this, they maintained their lead and leveled the match when the Indian player hit a shot outside.
Busanan also dominated from the start in the third and final game. Saina also tried to come back but by the break the Thai player had a good lead of 11-7. Even after this, Saina continued to fight and Busanan went ahead 18-11.
Busanan finally got six match points out of which Saina managed to save only two.
